The Atlanta Falcons have been the talk of the league after this year’s NFL Draft after making the most shocking and controversial pick in recent memory, and many fans and analysts have been quick to tear them down for their bold move.

Atlanta used five picks to fortify the front seven of it’s defense, but we all know those weren’t the picks that sparked all this controversy, although Trent Dilfer is one of the few who is a big fan of the pick.

Dilfer appeared on Outkick Sports and heaped praise upon the Falcons for taking Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick, saying “they’re looking to become Super Bowl contenders for a decade” and highlighting how different Penix is from Kirk Cousins, mentioning how much he can learn from him to be ready to carry the baton when it’s his turn.

Dilfer called Penix a gunslinger, while Cousins has more of an exactness to his game and that Penix learning from Cousins even for a short time could do wonders for his career.

Penix’s ability has not been the point of criticism here.

It has been the fact that the team just gave Cousins $180 million and after a few years of being just a quarterback away from contention, it used the 8th overall pick on a backup quarterback instead of getting another weapon to help make an immediate Super Bowl push.

It’s understandably a shocking pick, but if Penix is a star when he steps into the starting lineup in a few years, all will be forgotten.
