It came as a Russian missile brought down a television tower in Ukraine’s second city, Kharkiv, today.

Experts fear the area, just 15 miles from Russia, could face a second ground offensive after repulsing a tank assault on the first day of the war in February 2022.

Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s feared GUR military intelligence, warned that life would be even more “difficult” from mid-May to early June.

But he insisted that Ukraine would resist and prevail.

Budanov, who has survived repeated assassination attempts, said: “It is not catastrophic. But there will be problems from mid-May.”

Deliveries of American weapons will begin a few days after Republican congressmen ended a five-month stalemate in the House of Representatives.

The $61bn (£49bn) package will receive final approval from the US Senate tomorrow.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the new weapons would allow Ukrainian forces to “stabilize the front line.”
