UKRAINE will step up long-range strikes inside Russia as billions of pounds of new weapons arrive, Britain’s Chief of the Defense Staff says.
Admiral Sir Tony Radakin noted that Britain had no opposition to the attacks on Russian soil.
He said planes loaded with new Western weapons would help in the bombing raids.
He told a newspaper yesterday: “Their ability to carry out deep operations will increasingly become a feature of war.”
It comes after US President Joe Biden signed a £50bn lifetime contract to buy weapons for Ukraine.
But American weapons come with the caveat that they must be used only on the sovereign territory of Ukraine.
Long-range missiles provided by the United States were reportedly used last week to attack Russian targets in occupied Crimea.
Britain has pledged more than 1,600 long-range weapons, including Storm Shadow missiles and Paveway IV laser-guided bombs.
The UK last week agreed an additional £500m of military aid to Ukraine, taking our contribution to £3bn this year.
President Volodymyr Zelensky says Ukraine desperately needs more air defenses to intercept Moscow’s bombing raids.
General Sir Jim Hockenhull, head of the UK’s Strategic Command, also backed Ukraine’s long-range strikes against Russia, because it was “fighting a war of national survival.”
He said: “The fact that they see military value in attacking the Russians in depth is not surprising and is totally understandable.”
