WFP warns that half of Gaza’s population is “starving” and food aid is a “drop in the bucket” of need

While WFP provides food assistance to more than 1 million people in Gaza each month, the need was so acute that such efforts amount to “a drop in the ocean of need,” the agency said in a social media post.

The UN food aid agency also added that a humanitarian ceasefire was needed immediately.

Israel has consistently denied sending aid convoys to northern Gaza, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

He has called the reopening of four bakeries in northern Gaza thanks to “critical” support from the World Food Program a “drop in the bucket.”

In a post on X, UNRWA said Israeli authorities continue to prevent its food convoys from reaching the north of the besieged and bombed territory.

“We need safe, barrier-free access. Food supply is a matter of life and death,” she added.

Israel has launched a deadly military offensive in the Palestinian territory since October 1. 7 Hamas cross-border attack that killed almost 1,200 people.

Since then, nearly 34,200 Palestinians have been killed and more than 77,000 injured amid massive destruction and shortages of essential items.

The Israeli war has pushed 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement amid severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

Israel is accused of genocide before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which in January issued an interim ruling ordering Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take steps to ensure humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.
