Amazon’s streaming service Prime Video boasts a large selection of movies and TV shows in its library available to subscribers, but much of that content is temporary, with a number of titles leaving each month. With the large backing from Amazon, Prime Video has emerged as one of the biggest streaming services around, offering a giant catalog of previously released movies and shows while also developing acclaimed original content. However, Prime Video’s offerings disappear on a monthly basis on purpose, planned through contracts with film and television distributors.

April 2024 removed several notable titles from Prime Video from hit movies to beloved shows. The popular video game adaptation Sonic the Hedgehog left Prime Video on April 1 while the gritty crime drama Narc also left the platform on April 4. Prime Video also removed all eight seasons of the crime-comedy Monk on April 1. May 2024 also features a small number of titles being removed, but there are some very notable titles including Best Picture nominees, family-friendly movies, and underrated gems. Users can check out every departing title and how long they have to catch them before they are gone.

The Best Movies And TV Shows Leaving Prime Video May 2024

A Best Picture Nominee, An Indie Darling, & More

Flags Of Our Fathers (2006)

One of Clint Eastwood’s best movies as a director is leaving Prime Video on May 4. Flags of Our Fathers is an intense and thrilling World War II movie that tells the story behind the famous image of soldiers raising the American flag on Iwo Jima after a battle. The image has become an iconic one in American history, but there is far more story behind it than it initially seems.

Eastwood is at his strongest as a director, overseeing the intense action sequences during the battles in the Pacific Theater of the war while also exploring the lives of the soldiers after the war was fought. The movie features a great cast including Ryan Phillippe, Barry Pepper, Paul Walker, and Adam Beach in a standout role as a Native American soldier whose participation in the iconic moment was underplayed by those trying to sell the moment as a patriotic victory.

Licorice Pizza (2021)

Paul Thomas Anderson’s next movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio is on its way and it will be a follow-up to his last critically acclaimed project, Licorice Pizza. This charming and complex coming-of-age movie follows a teenage child actor who falls for an older girl while going on several misadventures around his home in San Fernando Valley in 1973.

The movie is one of Anderson’s lightest projects, filled with a lot of humor and charm coming from this specific yet oddly relatable relationship. Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim are fantastic in the lead roles and they are backed by a cast that includes some bigger names in supporting roles, such as Sean Penn and Bradley Cooper. It is also an engrossing period piece with Anderson bringing the 70s to like in a way that feels nostalgic yet authentic. The Best Picture nominee will be leaving Prime Video on May 4.

The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)

An underrated but worthwhile comedy-drama leaves Prime Video on May 4. Zack Gottsagen has a breakout role in The Peanut Butter Falcon as Zak, a young man with Down syndrome who breaks out of his assisted living facility to embark on a journey alongside a fisherman who is on the run (Shia LaBeouf) while a caring social worker (Dakota Johnson) attempts to track them down.

The trio of Gottsagen, LaBeouf, and Johnson make for a winning ensemble in this sweet, funny, and touching crowdpleaser. It feels like a modern Mark Twain story in many ways with a whimsical feel to the journey and these characters. While it was a smaller movie, it managed to gain a lot of attention through positive word of mouth, making it a great option for Prime Video users to check out while they can.

Witness (1985)

One of Harrison Ford’s best movies leaves Prime Video on May 4. Witness is a gripping crime drama that follows a young boy from an Amish community who witnesses a murder. Ford plays the detective who is assigned to the case, but when he discovers that the murderer is a fellow cop, he has to hide out in the Amish community where he learns their ways.

The premise might make it sound like a silly fish-out-of-water action comedy, and while there is some well-placed humor in the story, this is a grounded drama with some shocking violence. Ford also elevates the movie with his performance, which earned him his first and only Oscar nomination to date. He gives a true movie star performance, commanding the screen effortlessly while also creating a complex and interesting human character.

High-Rise (2016)

High-Rise is an intriguing and underseen thriller from filmmaker Ben Wheatley that will depart from Prime Video on May 6. The movie is set in the 1970s and follows the residents of a luxury apartment building. The building caters to the every need of the tenants, allowing for them to gradually become more and more cut off from the rest of the world. However, as the building begins to fall to ruin, life inside turns to chaos.

High-Rise will not be a movie for everyone as it is a dark and twisted tale that takes a slow-burn approach to the complicated story. However, while reviews were mixed, there are many who called it a masterpiece and a must-watch thriller. It also packs a strong ensemble of actors into its wild story with Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans, and Elizabeth Moss among the cast members.
