Hezbollah launches deepest attack inside Israel since Gaza war broke out

Hezbollah launched “a combined airstrike using decoys and explosive drones that targeted” two Israeli bases halfway between Acre and Nahariyya, it said in a statement Tuesday.

The Iran-backed group added that it acted in retaliation for an earlier Israeli attack that killed one of its fighters. He posted what appeared to be a satellite photo, with the location of the attack symbolized by a flash with a red circle around it.

The Israeli military said it was not aware of any of its facilities being attacked by Hezbollah, but had previously said it intercepted two “aerial targets” off Israel’s northern coast.

Later on Tuesday, Lebanon’s official NNA news agency reported that at least two people were killed and six others wounded after an Israeli airstrike hit a residential area in the southern Lebanese city of Hanin.

“Israeli fighter jets attacked a two-story house with two air-to-ground missiles, completely destroying the building inhabited by a family that had not left the city since the Israeli attacks began,” ANN added.

Hezbollah said it launched dozens of rockets into northern Israel on Tuesday night in response to the deaths of two civilians.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Israeli military said its airstrikes killed two Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah later confirmed the death of one of its fighters, Hussein Azkoul, but did not provide further details.

Another Israeli strike overnight killed Muhammad Attiya, a fighter with Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Forces, the military said. There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah on the claim.

Since the unprecedented Hamas attack on October 7 sparked Israel’s war on Gaza, there have been almost daily exchanges of cross-border fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli military.

Israeli strikes have killed about 270 Hezbollah fighters, as well as about 50 civilians.

Hezbollah rocket and drone fire has killed a dozen Israeli soldiers and half the civilians. The bombing has displaced tens of thousands of people on each side.
