Racing car leaves the track and kills seven people in Sri Lanka | World News

A racing car skidded off the track during a competition in Sri Lanka, killing seven people and injuring 20 others, authorities said.

The car crashed into a crowd of spectators and race officials during a race in the city of Diyatalawa, about 110 miles (180 kilometers) east of the capital, Colombo.

Around 45,000 spectators attended.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident and the condition of the driver was unknown.

Police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said the car left the track and crashed into spectators and officials.

Seven people, including four officials, died and 20 others were treated at a hospital, he added.

Three of the injured are in critical condition.

Police have launched an investigation into the accident.

The event was organized by the Sri Lanka Army and Sri Lanka Automobile Sports.

It was the 17th of the 24 scheduled events.
