Disney+ and Hulu confirmed Wednesday that Ryan Murphy’s Fox musical-drama Glee will be revived, with the creator and his original writing partners developing the project.
Murphy and co-creators wrote a new script
Murphy, who created the series with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, told Entertainment Tonight last month that the three had completed a script. He said they had reached out to members of the original cast and described the new project as “very sweet.”
“Brad [Falchuk] and Ian [Brennan] and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something,” Murphy said. “I've been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. And it's very sweet. They all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”
The original Glee ran on Fox from 2009 to 2015 and followed the New Directions show choir at a fictional Ohio high school. The ensemble included Lea Michele, Dianna Agron, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale, Chris Colfer and Darren Criss.
Cast interest has been mixed
Several original cast members have publicly weighed in on the idea of returning. Lea Michele, who played Rachel Berry, told E! News in September that she would “follow Ryan wherever he goes.” Jane Lynch said in 2024 that she would “absolutely” revisit her role as coach Sue Sylvester.
- Kevin McHale, who originally played Artie Abrams, has voiced concerns in the past about portraying a character in a wheelchair when he does not use one, saying he might prefer a different role.
- Chris Colfer, who played Kurt Hummel, previously described a reboot as “not for me” in 2019 but more recently told Bustle he would be open to the idea.
No cast list, production schedule or release window was announced. The streamers confirmed the reboot Wednesday, and Murphy’s comments indicate the project moved quickly from writing to outreach with original performers.
Murphy, Falchuk and Brennan wrote the earliest seasons of Glee, which combined musical performances with serialized storylines and addressed social themes through its high school setting. The revival announcement marks the latest wave of franchise returns and revivals across streaming platforms.
