Apple on Tuesday unveiled a new 14-inch MacBook Pro built around its latest M6 system on a chip and a redesigned 24-inch iMac that also uses the M6. The company said the laptop delivers up to 24 hours of battery life, adds support for Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and starts at $1,999.
What Apple announced
The new 14-inch MacBook Pro ships with 16GB of unified memory as standard, configurable to 32GB, and a memory bandwidth of up to 170GB/s. Apple said the M6 integrates a 12‑core CPU that includes what it described as the world’s fastest CPU core, alongside a 12‑core GPU. The company said the M6 delivers faster graphics, improved AI workload performance, and a step up from the prior M5 chip.
- Ports: HDMI, MagSafe 3, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, SDXC card slot, headphone jack
- Camera: 12‑megapixel front camera
- Charging: fast charging to 50% in 30 minutes with a compatible high‑wattage USB‑C adapter
- Connectivity: Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support
The M6, Apple said, boosts LLM prompt‑processing speed relative to older models and offers improved performance for everyday apps, photo editing and video production. Specific comparative figures Apple provided include up to 30% faster graphics and up to 25% faster AI workloads versus M5; Apple also cited a multi‑fold improvement over much older Apple silicon for certain prompt‑processing tasks.
M6 iMac and availability
Apple also introduced an M6‑powered iMac that starts at $1,499. The 24‑inch iMac features a 4.5K Retina display, an advanced camera and audio system, up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports and color‑matched accessories. Apple said the iMac delivers up to five times faster on‑device AI performance than the M4 model and includes Neural Accelerators in every core.
Both the new MacBook Pro and iMac are available for preorder beginning Oct. 28 and will ship starting Nov. 6. The 14‑inch MacBook Pro will be offered in space black and silver, and the iMac in multiple colors including blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange and silver.
Context
The announcements arrive a day before Apple’s promotional event billed as “Pro and Tell.” The company also revealed an updated iPad mini on Monday. Apple positioned the M6 upgrades as focused on faster graphics, longer battery life and greater on‑device AI capability, while adding next‑generation wireless standards to support higher throughput and lower latency for demanding workflows.
