Trader Joe’s is bringing back its mystery packs in stores in early November, giving shoppers another chance to buy limited-edition reusable bags without knowing which designs are inside. The grocery chain confirmed the return after last year’s packs drew attention through social media unboxing videos.
Each pack costs $2.99 and contains three reusable bags with a capacity of six gallons each. The bags are sealed inside a brown paper package, so customers see the designs only after opening it. The company’s representative told PEOPLE that the bags are made exclusively for the packs and are not sold separately.
“It’s become the ultimate ‘if you know, you know accessory.’”
Daniel Levine, a consumer and trends expert based in Oregon, used that phrase previously to describe the appeal of Trader Joe’s bags and their growing visibility beyond the grocery store. He said the brand’s imagery has come to represent a form of “imported exclusivity” tied to internet culture.
What is included in the packs
The latest assortment includes two designs that have not appeared before, along with bags that represent regions where Trader Joe’s operates. Some designs are tied to particular locations, meaning the selection can vary by store and area. The company also said the designs are exclusive to the mystery packs.
- Three reusable six-gallon bags are included in each pack.
- The price is $2.99 per pack.
- The assortment includes two new designs and regional editions.
- The bags are available through Trader Joe’s stores rather than as individual items.
The chain has more than 600 stores in 43 states. Because the packs are sold in stores and some designs are regional, shoppers may find different combinations depending on where they shop. The mystery format also means buyers cannot select a specific bag before opening the package.
The release follows a series of high-profile Trader Joe’s tote launches. The company’s mini striped bags became especially popular online after going viral in March 2024. A later summer release included miniature totes in pastel green, pink, brown and blue striped versions. Those bags measured 13 by 11 by 6 inches and sold for $2.99 each.
Trader Joe’s merchandise has also developed a resale market, with some shoppers posting their purchases online after store releases. Last year’s mystery packs sold out quickly, while social media users shared videos showing the designs they received. The new packs are expected on store shelves during the early-November launch window.
